Meet the Real Rescue Dog Behind Krypto the Superdog in the New Superman Movie
Move over Clark Kent—there’s a new superhero stealing hearts (and scenes) on the big screen, and he’s got four legs and a wagging tail.
In the latest Superman movie, Krypto the Superdog makes his dazzling debut, cape and all. But did you know the high-flying canine hero was actually inspired by a real rescue pup? Meet Ozu—the dog who brought Krypto to life.
Director James Gunn, known for his work on Guardians of the Galaxy, didn’t just create Krypto out of thin air. He used his own rescue dog, Ozu, as the model for the CGI pup. Ozu, who was rescued from a heartbreaking hoarding situation, became the 3D blueprint for Krypto—despite not loving the process of being filmed from every angle.
Gunn even used personal videos of Ozu playing with his cat to help animators nail Krypto’s playful and chaotic movements. One scene of Krypto leaping onto Superman? It’s directly inspired by Ozu’s real-life antics.
Ozu’s journey wasn’t easy. When Gunn first brought him home, the shy pup was overwhelmed and destructive—gnawing on furniture, eating shoes (and a laptop!), and refusing to be touched. But through patience and love, Ozu slowly came out of his shell.
As Gunn was writing the script for Superman, he found himself wondering: What if this wild, untrained dog had superpowers? That question became the heart of Krypto’s character—an unruly, loyal companion who, despite his quirks, proves himself a true hero.
At the end of the film, we learn that Krypto actually belongs to Supergirl (played by Milly Alcock), who left him in Superman’s care while off exploring space. Don’t worry—this won’t be Krypto’s last appearance. With a Supergirl movie on the way, fans can expect more from this mischievous mutt-turned-superstar.
Krypto’s origin story is a reminder of how powerful rescue stories can be. From an anxious, under-socialized dog to an inspiration for millions, Ozu proves that every pup has the potential to become a hero with the right support.
So the next time your dog chews up your shoes, remember—you might just be raising the next canine icon.
